HUTCHINSON HOUSE RECONSTRUCTION

Originally built around 1885 by Henry Hutchinson, a former enslaved person and son of the “Black King of Edisto,” the Hutchinson House reflects the significance of a modest rural home on once-isolated Edisto Island. Though simple in form, this four-room two-story structure symbolizes the determination of Edisto’s freedpeople to secure land ownership, voting rights, and full participation in civic life after emancipation.

This phased restoration, undertaken with the Edisto Island Open Land Trust, the Hutchinson descendants, multiple contractors, and the Edisto community, preserves the family’s story and highlights the community’s story in the broader narrative of shared American history.
